Therefore Atticus’s shooting of Tim Johnson is a discovery to Jem and Scout as a new aspect to their father of which they are proud. He is older than her peers’ parents and does not participate in some of their more active occupations such as playing football… He has never mentioned anything to his children concerning the fact that he has perfect aim with a gun, in fact he has probably never touched a gun in their presence. Scout considers her father an old man too frail and incapable of anything more than sitting around and reading. Harper Lee compares the two passages herself during the trial through the narration of Scout, who seems to realise that the two moments in her life contain the same sort of suspenseful atmosphere, t o kill a mockingbird mad dog.īoth of the extracts are life-changing times for Scout concerning her personal point of view on life. Firstly, to the climax of the novel, the outcome of the court case when the jury announces that Tom Robinson has been committed guilty. This extract from Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” can indeed be related to several others in the book. The passage is also very effective in the sense of excitement, suspense and meaningfulness of the relationships between the different characters of the novel. However, in the case of the infected animal, Atticus proves Scout wrong and shows that he can achieve what he has to in this particular situation, although this is unfortunately not always the case in the novel. Atticus is clearly the saviour, the hero of the novel trying to kill and destroy all form of prejudice and racism in Maycomb, although this is very idealistic. Tim Johnson could be viewed as representing the prejudice in the novel, and how like a rabid dog it spreads through the Deep South. In a few swift movements, he brought the rifle to his shoulder and fired the rifle and Tim Johnson flopped over, dead. The passage of the Atticus’s killing of the rabid dog is a very significant one in the thematic sense of the novel. Tim Johnson was about to continue on his original course, but his body went still and alert. Atticus dropped his glasses to the ground, and they broke. For God's sake look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley House! I can't shoot that well and you know it! Don't just stand there, Heck! He won't wait all day for you- Atticus reluctantly agreed to fire, for it had been 30 years since he fired a gun. Heck wanted Atticus to fire because he was afraid of hitting the Radley House because of his bad aim. We had better wait, sometimes they go straight, but he might follow the curve-hope he does or else he'll be in the Radley yard. While Calpurnia tried in vain to alert the Radley's, Heck Tate and Atticus roled in on a black Ford. Finch's office! Sir, I swear to God there's a mad dog coming down the street, come quick! After they showed Calpurnia Tim Johnson from a distance to her, she hurriedly called Atticus to come home because there was a rabid dog. Jem and Scout decided to go out hunting with their air rifles, but before they got 500 yards past the Radley's, Jem saw Old Tim Johnson and decided that they should go home and tell Calpurnia.
